Media interested in commentary about the Oscar-nominated film “12 Years a Slave” should contact Michael Guasco, Associate Professor of History at Davidson College. Guasco is author of the recently published book, "Slaves and Englishmen: Human Bondage in the Early Modern Atlantic World." As an academician, he can talk about the history of slavery around the world, and more specifically how it came to be instituted in the United States. As an aficionado of cinema, he notes that “12 Years a Slave” is a unique, ground-breaking film in its consistent focus on the slave character Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). “It’s a remarkable film,” said Guasco. “Most slave films, such as "Glory" and "Amistad," carry the narrative through the white characters. This film presents an unflinching look at slavery from the perspective of the slave. It’s a hard movie to watch. But it’s very rewarding.”
