Newswise — Thomas Pepinsky is an associate professor of government, an expert on Southeast Asia politics and emerging market economies in that region, and president of the American Institute for Indonesian Studies. He hails this month’s successful presidential elections in Indonesia, and offers his hope that president-elect Joko Widodo can live up to the promises of reform that helped fuel his victory.

Pepinsky says:

“Indonesia's presidential elections are a major triumph for the world's fourth most populous country. The victorious candidate, Joko Widodo, is a significant departure from the lineages of Indonesia's authoritarian past, and his convincing win over Prabowo Subianto leaves no doubt as that most Indonesians want better, cleaner and more effective government rather than the authoritarian leadership style offered by Prabowo.

“The challenge now for 'Jokowi' is to fulfill his campaign promises for governance reform, which will be no small task given the magnitude of the problems that he faces.”
