Newswise — Chicago (Nov. 4, 2013): The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) has presented Deborah Freiburg, RN MS with the 2013 Casey Hooke Distinguished Service Award. Freiburg received her award at the 37th APHON Annual Conference and Exhibit, held September 19-21 in Louisville, KY. This award is presented to an APHON member who has demonstrated excellence to service and to leadership of APHON.

Freiburg is the Executive Director for the Medical Nursing and Patient and Family Education Program in Washington, DC. She is a true APHON advocate and has been an APHON member for over 20 years. Freiburg served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors from 2006-2012, has participated on several APHON committees, presented at past annual conferences, and provided ongoing mentorship to many nurse members. Freiburg’s colleagues also state that one of her talents is building relationships to promote nursing and professionalism.

The Casey Hooke Distinguished Service Award was established in Hooke’s name to celebrate the fine leadership Hooke displayed as President during a difficult period in the organization’s history.

APHON is the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals. Its members are dedicated to promoting optimal nursing care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, and their families. APHON provides the leadership and expertise to pediatric hematology/oncology nurses by defining and promoting the highest standards of practice and care to the pediatric, adolescent and young adult communities.
