Newswise — Chicago (Nov. 6, 2013): The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) has awarded Laura Dorneman, BSN RN CPHON®, with the 2013 APHON Counts Award. Dorneman received her award at the 37th Annual APHON Conference and Exhibit, held September 19-21 in Louisville, KY. APHON offers three writing awards to recognize contributing authors of the APHON Counts newsletter.

Dorneman, Resource Nurse in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR, won this award for her My Most Memorable Case article, “Lessons Learned in Pediatric Oncology” in the Spring 2013 issue of APHON Counts.

My Most Memorable Case articles feature personal stories from APHON members and the various life lessons their patients have taught them. Dorneman’s memorable case includes valuable lessons she learned from five of her pediatric oncology patients.

In her story, Dorneman states, “As pediatric oncology nurses, we are privileged to get to know and care for our patients and families during one of the most difficult journeys imaginable. Although the care we provide to these children and families is critical, the lessons that they teach us are just as valuable.”

APHON is the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals.
