Newswise — FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (July 27, 2015) — For the second consecutive year, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Atlanta Falcons will “Rise Up” to promote skin cancer prevention and detection by hosting free SPOTme® skin cancer screenings during the opening days of Falcons training camp.

The free screenings, which will be conducted by board-certified dermatologists from the Atlanta area, will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, Saturday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 2. Screening participants will be eligible to win autographed Falcons memorabilia.

“Living in Atlanta’s warm and sunny climate, our fans should be aware of their skin cancer risk and take steps to protect themselves from the sun, just like the Falcons players and coaches do,” said Falcons center Joe Hawley. “These free SPOTme® screenings are a great opportunity for our fans to get their skin checked and learn more about skin cancer.”

It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Anybody can get skin cancer, no matter their age, gender or race. Although skin cancer can affect anyone, men ages 50 and older have a higher risk than the general population of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

“It’s estimated that 2,350 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Georgia this year,” said board-certified dermatologist Jason A. Clark, MD, FAAD. “Ultraviolet radiation is the most preventable risk factor for all forms of skin cancer, so it’s important to protect yourself from the sun by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early and treated properly, so we encourage Falcons fans to take advantage of this SPOTme® event, where they can get a free screening and learn more about skin cancer prevention and detection.”
