A Colorado State University team, led by Professor Joseph von Fischer, developed the sensing system Google installed in its Street View cars to measure where and how much methane is leaking from underground natural gas pipleines in Syracuse, N.Y., Burlington, Vt. and other U.S. cities.

Von Fischer also helped design the routes for Google cars and the sophisticated data analysis tools to interpret those methane measures for the demonstration project, which is being led by the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund.

The collaboration between EDF, CSU and Google allows the creation of interactive maps that depict leaks beneath the streets of selected cities. The first cities mapped were Indianapolis, Boston and New York’s Staten Island.
