Newswise — Baltimore, MD – The Sinai Rehabilitation Center and the Comprehensive Sports Concussion Program at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute have announced their fall conferences, both of which will focus on concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries.
On Friday, October 24, the Sinai Rehabilitation Center will hold its 12th annual fall series, entitled, “The Evolving Landscape in Treatment of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: New Evidence in Concussion Management.” Talks by Kevin Crutchfield, M.D., director of the Comprehensive Sports Concussion Program at LifeBridge Health, and Martha S. Burns, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, from Northwestern University will highlight the program.
Crutchfield will discuss “Concussion: Complex Diagnosis, Effective Treatment, and Related Controversies,” and Burns will discuss “Linking Neuroscience to Clinical Practice” in three sessions: Early Cognitive Rehabilitation following mTBI; Treatment of Prefrontal Lobe Deficits—Executive Function, Self-Awareness, and Social Skills; and Intervention Strategies for Post-Injury Changes in Memory and Emotional Control.
On Saturday, October 25, the Comprehensive Sports Concussion Program at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute will conduct its 3rd annual conference, entitled “Bridging the Gap: Return to Learn.” The aim of this conference is to provide current information about correctly recognizing the signs of concussion, effectively managing concussion, the etiology of concussion deficits and returning athletes to their former levels of cognitive function.
Speakers at this conference will cover the spectrum of care for patients with concussions, from acute injuries to the return to the classroom or workplace. Among the speakers will be David Hovda, Ph.D., from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Robert G. Graw, Jr., M.D., CEO and chief pediatrician at Righttime Medical Care; and Deborah Somerville, R.N., MPH, with the Office of Health Services at Baltimore County Public Schools.
Presentation will be: “Update on the Chemistry of Concussion,” “Acute Evaluation on the Sideline,” “Evaluation of Acute Brain Injury in the Urgent-Care Setting,” “Symptomatic Treatment of Concussion, Perspective of the School Nurse in Managing Concussion,” “Neuropsychologic Sequelae of Concussion” and “Concussion and the Public School System.”
The target audience for both conferences includes primary care physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, therapists (physical, occupational, speech language), case managers, social workers, athletic trainers, coaches, teachers, school nurses, school administrators and other professionals interested in the treatment of mild brain injury.
Both conferences will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, 2401 West Belvedere Avenue, Baltimore MD 21215; lunch and parking are included. A discount is available to those who wish to attend both days.
