Newswise — SCHAUMBURG, Ill., November 1, 2016 — Alan M. Scarrow, MD, JD, has been named president for 2016-2017 by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). His appointment was announced at the CNS Annual Business Meeting held in San Diego, September 27, 2016. Dr. Scarrow currently serves as president of Mercy Health System for the Springfield Communities in Missouri, where he has practiced for 13 years.

Dr. Scarrow’s new position as president of the CNS follows as a natural progression of his long involvement with the organization. He began serving the CNS in 2005 as a member-at-large and has held an additional 13 CNS committee positions in addition to being the former CNS secretary, and Annual Meeting chair.

In looking forward to his term as president, Dr. Scarrow said, “It is a great honor to serve the people and mission of the CNS. I am very grateful to the membership for entrusting me to help guide the organization in the next year as we continue to build on our 65-year history of advancing neurosurgical care.”

Dr. Scarrow was raised in Fairbury, Nebraska, received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from University of Nebraska, and graduated from the medical and laws schools at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1996. After a surgical internship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, he completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Pittsburg Health Center. During his neurosurgical residency, he spent one year working on Capitol Hill as a staffer for Senator Arlen Specter on a CNS Charles Plante Public Policy Fellowship. The combination of medical and law degrees gives him a unique insight into many of the nation’s medicolegal issues.

He is married to Meera Scarrow, MD, JD, who is an OB/GYN at Mercy Health System in Springfield. They have three children, Evelyn (15), William (12), and Harrison (9). Outside of the medical world, the Scarrow’s enjoy working on their Angus farm. ###
