The Senate and House today voted overwhelmingly to override President Obama’s veto of legislation allowing victims of 9/11 to sue the Saudi Arabian government. Gregory Gause, head of the International Affairs Department at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, calls the veto override a bad idea, explaining, “This is a reflection of an increasing sense on Capitol Hill and in public opinion that the Saudis as an ally are not worth the trouble. This is not the position of the executive branch, but Saudi Arabia has always had a tough time with Congress. However, the Senate just a few weeks ago refused to stop a big arms deal to Saudi Arabia, so Congress has not gone completely anti-Saudi.”
