Newswise — Do you ever wonder why you feel so exhausted after returning from a vacation? The flights, car rides, hotel stays and on-the-go activities just might play a part in the way you feel. Dr. Marbella Zumaya, a physician with Covenant Medical Group, gives some tips on how to stay healthy while vacationing as well as how to come back feeling refreshed.

 Plan Ahead – When developing your trip itinerary, be sure to schedule in some down time for you to relax. The body needs time to rest and recuperate in order for it to function properly and fight off illnesses. It is also important to make a list of every medication you are on in case you have to see a physician or go to the emergency room. Pack Defensively – Be sure to pack a travel medical kit that includes: o Prescription medicationso Health insurance cards/paperwork (in case of an emergency)o Sunscreeno Insect repellanto Pain/fever medication (ibuprofen)o Antihistamines or decongestantso Antacid tabletso Motion sickness medicationo First aid suppliesTake enough medications to last the entire trip plus a two to three day extra supply in case something does happen. Also, it is important to carry on these items if you are flying in case your luggage is lost or arrives at a different time. Get Some Air – Whether you are on a plane or in the car, open the overhead vent to circulate air flow. Directing the air toward your chest can minimize contact with airborne germs. Move Around – When taking a long car trip or airplane ride, it is necessary to keep your blood circulating. This can be done by flexing your lower extremities or getting up and walking around. If your legs tend to swell, support hose can help. If you are driving, be sure to stop often to allow passengers to move around. Moving around helps prevent blood clots and keeps your blood flowing. Sleep Safely – Check the mattress and back of headboard for bed bugs. Good hand washing is essential at hotels. Also while at the hotel, only use plastic cups with a wrapping and avoid glass courtesy cups. Bring slippers or flip flops to wear in the room and around the hotel.  Choose Your Food and Drink Carefully –Be cautious of food that looks as if it has been out for a while (like buffets). Avoid eating raw or undercooked food. If visiting a different country, do not drink the tap water or eat food at room temperature. Drink bottled water. Be careful if you choose to eat fresh fruits and vegetables which may have been washed with local water.  Wash Your Hands Often – wash before eating, after touching your face, after handling money and after traveling by public transport. Germs are everywhere and washing your hands is the best way to avoid catching a disease. Carry antibacterial hand wipes or gel to use when on the go. Use Sunscreen – Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat that covers your face and neck when outside for long periods of time. Returning home with an unbearable sunburn is no fun. Be Smart – Do not go in the water with an open wound as this can lead to an infection. Also, always wear a life jacket if out in open water, even if you are experienced. Don’t Overdo Things – Get plenty of rest, drink lots of water and avoid extreme heat or cold.
