Newswise — SAN FRANCISCO – October 16, 2013 – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) announced today the election of Daniel J. Cole, M.D., to First Vice President of the ASA Executive Committee during the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2013 annual meeting. Dr. Cole is professor of anesthesiology and vice dean for continuous professional development at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

“I am honored to be elected to the ASA’s Executive Committee as First Vice President,” said Daniel J. Cole. “This is a transformative time for healthcare and our specialty. Our purpose is to ensure that every patient has patient-centered, physician-led medical care that is safe and of the highest quality."

A member of ASA since 1982, Dr. Cole has served the Society in numerous roles. Most recently, he served as a director of the ASA Board of Directors. He has also been chair of ASA’s Committee on Annual Meeting Oversight and a member of the Board Review Committee on Professional Affairs. Dr. Cole has been President of the California Society of Anesthesiologists and a representative on the Arizona Board of Directors for the past 9 years.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists Executive Committee consists of the president, president-elect and the first vice president. The Executive Committee expedites, executes and administers the policies adopted by the ASA House of Delegates and ASA Board of Directors. The committee also publishes and implements positions or statements on behalf of ASA when proven to be in the Society’s best interests.

Dr. Cole graduated from Andrews University, and the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine and his fellowship in Neuroanesthesia at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Cole and his wife, Cristine, live in Scottsdale. They have two sons, Stephen and Andrew, and their daughter-in-law, Elizabeth. Outside of medicine, Dr. Cole enjoys all forms of exercise, running, weights, ice hockey, soccer, karate and hot yoga. He also likes to read and listen to music.
