Newswise — Michael Cohen, M.D. , professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, served on the committee that developed the diagnostic errors report and is available for interview.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 11am EDT, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will publish a report on diagnostic errors in health care, examining the consequences of inaccurate or delayed diagnoses and recommendations for reducing them.

The diagnostic errors analysis is the latest in a series of reports, which includes To Err is Human Building a Safer Health System, published in 1999. The report received national attention, citing evidence that up to 100,000 Americans died each year due to medical errors, and energized a movement for increased patient safety and quality care. The new report builds on previous findings, drawing attention to diagnostic errors in patient care. Like the previous one, this is expected to be a seminal report. Michael Cohen, M.D. , served on the 21-person committee that developed the diagnostic errors report and is available to discuss their findings. Please see contact information below for details. He is a professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, a member of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and a national leader in pathology. Cohen is recognized by Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, and Salt Lake Super Doctors. He specializes in anatomic pathology and is a national expert in cytopathology and urologic pathology, and has served on editorial boards for Clinical Cancer Research, the American Journal of Pathology and other journals; peer review panels for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs; and leadership positions in the College of American Pathologists, the American Society of Investigative Pathology and other professional organizations.
