Newswise — Gottlieb Memorial Hospital today introduced the Epic electronic medical record system for patients in the hospital. This new system will offer many benefits to patients and physicians.

“Gottlieb’s upgraded medical record system provides doctors, nurses and all caregivers immediate access to health information,” said Ken Fishbain, chief operating officer, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. “This technology also will bring significant clinical and operational efficiencies to Gottlieb.”

Patients' medical records will be available immediately whenever and wherever the physicians need it through a few simple keystrokes in Epic. Physicians will get information about patients' care, such as test results and communication with other physicians, more quickly and easily through electronic inboxes. This new system also will allow Gottlieb to provide more integrated care for patients who visit several doctors in the health system.

As a part of Loyola University Health System, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital is supported by an unprecedented level of academic medical strength. Loyola was named one of the nation’s Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems in 2012, according to results of the Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study.

This award marked the 10th time Loyola had been named to the list. Hospitals are recognized based on their progress in adoption, implementation and use of information technology in infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality, safety and care continuum. Among the reasons Loyola was included on the list was its investment in an electronic medical record system.

“Loyola is a leader among hospitals nationwide in adopting a fully interactive medical record that is linked to service areas throughout the health system, such as the pharmacy and billing,” said Art Krumrey, vice president and chief information officer, Loyola University Medical Center. “Implementing Epic at Gottlieb is an example of Loyola’s ongoing commitment to invest in medical record technology to better serve our patients.”

Gottlieb Memorial Hospital joins its community-based physicians who have been using Epic in the outpatient setting. These Gottlieb physicians have taken their electronic medical record system a step further by offering patients access to myLoyolaSelect, an online portal where patients can access their electronic medical records, communicate securely with their physicians, and review and pay their bills online. This service enhances the communication and strengthens the partnership between the patient, their caregivers and the office staff.
