The George Washington University has experts available to provide context, opinion and analysis on the long-term unemployment benefits debate. On April 7, the U.S. Senate voted to extend long-term unemployment benefits that expired last year. The legislation, which now heads to the House of Representatives, but faces opposition, would retroactively restore benefits that were ended in December and maintain them through the end of May.

Burt Barnow, Amsterdam Professor of Public Service, is an expert on labor issues. Professor Barnow worked for the U.S. Department of Labor for nearly nine years, including four years as director of the Office of Research and Evaluation in the Employment and Training Administration. He has also conducted several studies on unemployment insurance.

Steve Billet, director of the Legislative Affairs Program, is an expert on legislative processes as well as the tactics and strategies used by those wishing to influence the debate, and is available to discuss the potential next steps in the long-term unemployment benefits debate. Lara Brown, director of the Political Management Program, is an expert on national elections, presidential candidates, congressional incumbents and American political parties. Professor Brown is available to discuss these issues as they relate to the debate and what the outcome could mean for the political parties. Mark Kennedy, director of the Graduate School of Political Management, is a Congressional expert. Professor Kennedy was a member of the U.S. Congress, R-Minn., from 2001 to 2007 and is available to discuss his experiences in the House of Representative as they relate to the long-term unemployment benefits debate.
