On April 7, the U.S. Senate voted to extend long-term unemployment benefits that expired last year. The legislation, which now heads to the House of Representatives, but faces opposition, would retroactively restore benefits that were ended in December and maintain them through the end of May.
Burt Barnow, Amsterdam Professor of Public Service, is an expert on labor issues. Professor Barnow worked for the U.S. Department of Labor for nearly nine years, including four years as director of the Office of Research and Evaluation in the Employment and Training Administration.
