Newswise — October 22, 2014 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – Talking about the state of his profession, Dr. Nima Arkani-Hamed recently said “I haven’t been this excited about physics in a very long time.” He’ll share why he’s so excited during his Perimeter Institute (PI) public lecture on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at 7 pm EST.

The free talk and live webcast, part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series presented by Sun Life Financial, is titled “Quantum Mechanics and Spacetime in the 21st Century” and will explore how recent research into quantum mechanics – nature’s most fundamental forces and phenomena – promises to shed new light on our understanding of the universe’s fabric of time and space.

Based at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study and a Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at Perimeter Institute, Arkani-Hamed is known for his infectious enthusiasm for decoding the mysteries of the universe, and renowned for his dynamic and accessible speaking style. He is among the most sought-after experts on topics including dark matter, extra dimensions, particle colliders, and the interconnectedness of them all.

A winner of the prestigious Fundamental Physics Prize in 2012, Arkani-Hamed has shown how the extreme weakness of gravity, relative to other forces of nature, might be explained by the existence of extra dimensions of space. He has taken a lead in proposing new physical theories that can be tested at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. He is also known for his prominent role in the critically acclaimed 2013 documentary Particle Fever, about the search for the Higgs boson.

Arkani-Hamed’s public lecture will be webcast live on Thursday Nov. 6, 2014 at 7 pm EST. Online viewers can pose questions to Arkani-Hamed by tweeting to @Perimeter and using the hashtag #piLIVE. Click here to sign up to receive an email reminder about the live webcast.
