Newswise — Washington D.C. -- At this year’s exciting SRA conference in Denver, more than 600 experts in environment, public health, natural hazards, engineering, public policy, law, risk communication, and economics will discuss their emerging research on important risks facing the United States and other nations and will present public policy decision tools with societal implications.
Addressing a broad range of science and policy matters, the annual SRA meeting is “one of the most important and highest profile events that links science and decisions for policymakers, stakeholders and the public involved in critical judgments about risks to society and the environment,” says SRA President-Elect Pamela Williams of the E RiskSciences, LLP consultancy and the Colorado School of Public Health.
On Monday, December 8, a panel of energy, health, social governance, and government experts will address “Technological Advances, Risk Tradeoffs, and Societal Concerns Associated with Hydraulic Fracking.” On Tuesday, December 9, David Goff, the Dean of the Colorado School of Public Health, and other panelists will address rapidly emerging “Risks, Benefits, and Public Policy Issues Surrounding Legalized Marijuana Use” issues. On the final day of the conference, December 10, natural hazards researchers will speak on “Natural Disaster Risks: Strategies for Adaptation and Risk Management.”
The SRA annual meeting draws a broad cross-section of U.S. and international technical experts, academics and policy professionals. This year the theme is Risk Analysis: The Common Denominator, using a risk analysis framework and risk-related tools to evalu¬ate and solve complex or divisive environmental and public health issues and to examine public responses to natural disasters, such as the recent Colorado floods. Presenters will also place special emphasis on the better integration of environmental, community, and occupational risk assessment methods and approaches.
SRA encompasses an international membership spanning many disciplines, including health sciences, communications, engineering, security, law and policy as well as economics and other sciences. “SRA analysts integrate the approaches and tools offered by scientists and risk practitioners from many disciplines and share a commitment to providing astute decision support,” says current SRA President Ortwin Renn of the University of Stuttgart.
SRA’s experts will offer their latest insights in almost 100 plenary and technical sessions on diverse subjects of pressing national, regional, state and local concern.
