Newswise — Jonathan Duchac, Fulbright Distinguished Chair at Vienna University of Business and Economics and Merrill Lynch Professor of Accountancy and director of the Enterprise Risk Management program at Wake Forest University's Calloway School of Business and Accountancy, will address the global financial crisis in a speech at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at the United States Embassy in Vienna, Austria.

His talk, titled "The Perfect Storm: The Global Financial Crisis of 2008," examines the inter-relationships between economic events, technological developments, monetary policy, social events, corporate strategy, population trends and regulatory environment that created the conditions for a crisis of such magnitude. The unique combination of these conditions over the past decade has given rise to what former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has called a "once-in-a-century credit tsunami."

The speech, which is open to the public, is jointly sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the Austrian-American Fulbright Commission.

In Vienna since late September as a visiting lecturer and researcher with the Fulbright Scholars Program, Duchac offers the valuable perspective of an expert who has both academic and Wall Street experience. He has been able to observe both the origin of the financial crisis in the United States and its recent expansion across the globe.

Duchac has published extensively on financial markets issues and testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He is the co-author of several widely used accounting textbooks and also advises a number of companies on financial reporting and risk management issues.
