Georgia Regents University Professor David M. PollockElected President-Elect of the American Physiological SocietyThree members also elected to governing Council

Newswise — BETHESDA, Md. (Feb. 14, 2013)—David M. Pollock, PhD, Regents’ Professor and Chief of the Section of Experimental Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Georgia Regents University (GRU) will become President-Elect of the American Physiological Society (APS), the nation’s premier organization for fostering scientific research, dissemination, and education about physiology. A renal physiologist whose work focuses on the interplay between the kidney and hypertension (high blood pressure), Dr. Pollock will assume his new duties at the end of the APS Annual Meeting being held April 20-24, 2013, in Boston. He will succeed Kim E. Barrett, PhD, who will become APS President.

Dr. Pollock received his PhD degree in Physiology from the University of Cincinnati in 1983 and completed a fellowship in the Departments of Physiology and Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following postings at Harvard University and Abbott Laboratories, he joined GRU (then the Medical College of Georgia) in 1995. In 2011 he was named founding Chief of GRU’s Section of Experimental Medicine in the Department of Medicine. His research focuses on the interaction of endothelin, angiotensin, inflammatory mediators, and oxidative stress in hypertension. He describes the impact of this work in an online video at http://bit.ly/yH5wTK

Dr. Pollock is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, and Editor-in-Chief of Comprehensive Physiology. He is also an editorial board member at the journal Hypertension.

When notified of his selection, Dr. Pollock said, “Physiology is the basis of medicine, and for some time, physiology and medicine appear to have diverged. My hope is that during my three years on the APS Council I can help bridge this gap as I am convinced that the integration of physiology and medicine is the platform on which to build better patient care.” Barrett Assumes Presidency, Barman Becomes Immediate Past President

When Dr. Pollock is installed as President-Elect, current President-Elect Kim E. Barrett, PhD will become APS President and serve for a one-year term. Dr. Barrett is Professor of Medicine and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and former Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Physiology–Cell Physiology. Her research focuses on the biology of the intestinal epithelium and its relevance to digestive diseases.

Dr. Barrett will succeed outgoing president Susan M. Barman, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Michigan State University, East Lansing. Beginning in April Dr. Barman, a neurophysiologist, will serve a one-year term as Immediate Past President.
