Newswise — Gloria Steinem will join several distinguished speakers at a conference titled “National Security and Women’s Insecurity: Why Women Matter in Foreign Policy,” hosted by the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University on Sept. 11.
The all-day session — from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. — will be held at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center.
As a writer, lecturer, political activist and feminist organizer, Steinem has spent decades raising awareness regarding issues of equality and was a 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.
The conference will include several other keynote speakers as well as three panel discussions addressing such topics as U.S. foreign policy and the women of Afghanistan, a more serious consideration of women in state foreign policy, and policy recommendations for the next U.S. president with regard to global women’s empowerment.
Conference speakers will include current and former policymakers, nongovernmental activists and academic scholars. They include Ambassador Ryan Crocker, current dean of the Bush School and former U.S. ambassador to six countries throughout the Middle East; Ambassador Swanee Hunt, former United States ambassador to Austria and founder of the Institute for Inclusive Security; Michèle Flournoy of the Center for a New American Security; Alissa Johannsen Rubin, current Paris bureau chief and former Afghanistan bureau chief for the New York Times; and Valerie Hudson, professor and George H.W. Bush Chair in the international affairs department at the Bush School. The full list of speakers includes Anne Marie Goetz, Robin Morgan, Charlotte M. Ponticelli, Sima Samar, Donald Steinberg, Lauren Wolfe, Micah Zenko, Kathleen Kuehnast, and Christine Fair.
A book signing by Hudson and her co-author, Patricia Leidl, of their most recent book, The Hillary Doctrine: Sex and American Foreign Policy (Columbia University Press, 2015), is scheduled at the close of the event. The book focuses on women’s rights as a national security issue, analyzing the implementation of that proposition in U.S. foreign policy during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state.
