Newswise — A recent study in Nature Communications found that for mice following a diet containing 25 percent extra sugar—which is the mouse equivalent of a healthy human diet plus three cans of soda or other sweetened beverage daily—the females died at twice the normal rate and males were 25 percent less likely to hold territory and reproduce. The results were based a toxicity test developed at the University of Utah.

The researchers concluded this is evidence that sugar consumed at concentrations currently considered safe has a dramatic adverse impact on mammal health, and demonstrates the adverse effects of sugar in the human diet.
