Holiday Health: GW Experts on Weight Gain, New Year’s Resolutions and the Holiday Blues Available to Comment

The 2016 holiday season is upon us, and the George Washington University has experts to discuss the health aspects of the next six weeks.

Weight Management and NutritionTodd Miller directs the GW Weight Management and Human Performance Lab. He is an expert on fitness and can comment on weight management during the holidays. Dr. Miller is also associate professor of exercise and nutrition sciences. Kim Robien, associate professor of exercise and nutrition sciences, is an expert on food and nutrition. She can discuss general nutrition questions, including how to stick to a healthy diet during a holiday season filled with good cheer and rich foods, as well as issues related to food access and sustainable food systems.

New Year’s ResolutionNancy Rudner is part-time faculty in the GW School of Nursing focusing on improving health though patient care, program planning and policy. She is also a worksite and community health coach, working with individuals and employer groups to maximize their health She can offer six simple tips on how to maintain New Year's resolutions throughout 2017.

Dr. Rudner also says the holidays provide a good opportunity to discover your family’s medical history. She can provide tips on exploring your family's history, uncovering some mysteries and recording the information for future use. She can explain how your family history can help you make informed health choices now and how you can influence your health in spite of your genetic history.

Holiday Blues and WellbeingSherry Molock, associate professor of clinical psychology, is an expert in depression and suicide in adolescents and young adults and looks specifically at suicide prevention programs for African-American teens and young adults in faith-based communities.

Vivek Jain, assistant professor of medicine and director of the GW Sleep Disorders Center, is an expert on sleep disorders. He can speak on disrupted sleep during the holidays. Daniel Lieberman, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, is an expert on depression, addiction, and substance abuse. He can speak about holiday stress and excess drinking during the holidays.

Brian Choi, associate professor of medicine and co-director of advanced cardiac imaging, is an expert on cardiovascular issues. He can speak on holiday stress and the impact this may have on heart health. Babak Sarani, associate professor of surgery and chief of trauma and acute surgery, is an expert on trauma and emergency care. He can speak about trauma-related incidences during the holiday season. Raj Rao, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of orthopaedic surgery, can speak to common winter injuries that occur from shoveling snow or stringing up lights. His special expertise is in spine, neck and back injuries.

Kaylan Baban, assistant professor of medicine, is an expert in diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, mind-body and a general holistic approach to lifestyle medicine. She can speak to these topics during the holiday season.
