Newswise — Sun safety: Limit your direct exposure to the sun and use sunscreen with at least 40 SPF if outdoors. Follow safety guidelines at the beach or pool: Do not swim in restricted areas and observe lifeguard instructions. Young children should NEVER be left unsupervised at the pool or at the beach. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold: Eating improperly cooked or stored foods may result in illness. Decrease your chance of mosquito bites: Use a repellent with at least 20 percent DEET (which offers protection of up to several hours) and if using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen FIRST, then the repellent SECOND. If entering wooded areas: Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants that can tuck into your socks, and do a full body inspection for ticks after your time outdoors.

Observe local safety laws when bicycling: Always use safety helmets and other protective gear as mandated by law. During periods of high temperatures: Hydrate often. Drink water and avoid sugary drinks or alcohol when possible. Also be sure to check on your elderly neighbors.
