Newswise — FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – In the wake of President Barack Obama’s Executive Action announcement last week, a fierce debate has been reignited across the country about immigration reform and the surrounding legalities of the issue.

Nova Southeastern University is home to a nationally renowned expert in this subject who can provide answers and insight on constitutional law as it pertains to immigration.

James Wilets, J.D., M.A., is a professor of law at NSU's Shepard Broad School of Law. Wilets teaches and writes in the areas of Constitutional Law, Immigration, International Law and Human Rights. He has served as an expert witness in more than 90 asylum cases with respect to human rights country conditions. He has extensive experience working with the media on various stories, having been interviewed for radio and television regarding immigration and international law. He also writes extensively on international and constitutional issues.

Wilets prepared, at the request of the UN Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali the first two drafts of a proposal for reforming the human rights functions of the United Nations, which was subsequently incorporated into the UN’s Agenda for Peace. Wilets worked as an attorney for the International Human Rights Law Group’s Rule of Law Project in Romania and led a joint mission to Liberia by the National Democratic Institute and the Carter Center.

Wilets is also the chair of the Inter-American Center for Human Rights. He received his master’s degree in International Relations from Yale University in 1994, his Juris doctorate from Columbia Law School in 1987 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1982.
