Newswise — Chicago (July 16, 2014): The 38th APHON Annual Conference and Exhibit, taking place September 4-6 in Portland, OR, will bring together a community of more than 800 professionals who share a deep understanding of the daily demands of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing and who strive to bring their practice to the next level of expertise. Attendees will delve into important clinical practice issues and review innovative strategies essential for managing the challenges facing pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and the patients they serve.

Robin Getman, professional speaker, trainer and humorist, will kick off the conference with the opening keynote address, R.E.L.A.X., sharing stories and ideas guaranteed to help attendees manage their stress levels.

General Sessions will include “Creating Moments in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Palliative Care” by Kathleen Perko, MS RN PNP CHPPN CPON®. Perko’s presentation will look at new and innovative ways to connect with patients and families, as well as how to focus on those unique relationships.

Attendees are also encouraged to attend one of the preconference courses or workshops. Christina Baggott, PhD RN PNP-BC CPON® and Lauri Linder, PhD APRN CPON®, will present the preconference workshop, Digital Health: Technology to Advance Patient Care, Education, and Research. During this presentation, attendees will gain knowledge in the application of health technology along with hands-on learning opportunities with selected technologies.

APHON is once again partnering with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) to present a special educational track of sessions that focus on the care of children enrolled in COG clinical trials. Sessions include adherence to oral chemotherapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and clinical trials focusing on late effects of childhood cancer treatment.
