Newswise — Toronto, ON (July 8, 2014) – The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre announces the appointment of six of its world-renowned physicians to leading positions at several preeminent medical journals.

“The outstanding achievements of these doctors in the field of cardiovascular medicine, surgery and imaging is further evidence of the international leadership recruited and housed within the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN (University Health Network) family,” says Dr. Barry Rubin, Medical Director, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. “We are incredibly proud of these physicians whose expertise and work are foundational to the innovative research, groundbreaking treatments and improved patient outcomes in cardiac and vascular care which are central to our mission.”

Six physicians, including a cardiologist, two cardiovascular surgeons, a cardiovascular radiologist, an interventional radiologist and a pathologist ― part of a medical team that treats more than 55,000 patients annually ― are among those appointed to these prestigious posts. They include:

Dr. Jagdish Butany, Director, Division of Pathology, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Editor, Human Pathology-Case Reports.

Dr. Michael Farkouh, Director, Clinical Trials, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Associate Editor, Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Thomas Forbes, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and incoming Chair of Vascular Surgery, University of Toronto as of September 2014. Associate Editor, The Journal of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Dheeraj Rajan, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Imaging, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Associate Editor,The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Bernd Wintersperger, Section Head Cardiac Imaging, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Imaging, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network. Associate Editor, Investigative Radiology.

Dr. Richard Weisel, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Editor-in-Chief, The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

The above-noted appointments were announced by the various medical journals between March and June, 2014. Dr. Weisel’s post takes effect January 1, 2015.
