Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. – Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine celebrated as 146 students received their medical degrees and numerous honors May 16 and 17, 2014, including 24 cum laude graduates, 6 magna cum laude graduates and 3 summa cum laude graduates. Twenty-five students were inducted into the honor medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and seven were inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
“Our Stritch graduates are ready to serve, heal and contribute to our health professions,” said Dean and Chief Diversity Officer Linda Brubaker, MD, MS. “As our students continue on to the next phase of their professional education, they will remember that the best physicians treat the human spirit.”
Throughout the weekend, events were held that lauded the dedication and strive for excellence that characterizes Stritch students. Events on May 16 included a Re-commissioning and Promotion Ceremony for students who are a part of the United States Military Medical Corps. A Baccalaureate Mass and reception was held to honor all the graduates and their families. An Honors and Awards Recognition Ceremony highlighted the achievements of numerous students for excelling in academics, service, patient care, research and bioethics.
The pinnacle of the weekend was the commencement ceremony on May 17 on the University’s Lake Shore Campus. Families, friends and loved ones rejoiced as years of training and commitment were actualized for the newest physicians. Daniel Roger Opel was selected by the Class of 2014 as the student speaker and beloved former Associate Dean of Student Affairs Terri Wronski gave the commencement address.
The Class of 2014 will continue their medical education in residency programs in 29 different states. This includes 34 percent going into primary care and 66 percent being trained as medical specialists including 15 percent going into emergency medicine.
