The first participant in the first cystic fibrosis study using adult stem cells, Robert (Bob) Held, receives an infusion of the cells to test for safety. Researchers believe the cells may have the potential to tamp down inflammation of the lungs caused by cystic fibrosis. Hillard Lazarus, MD, (left) Director of Cellular Therapies Integrated Services at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, administered the cells with the study’s Principal Investigator James Chmiel, MD, (right) Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Center at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.
