Newswise — WASHINGTON—Michael Plesniak, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows. The AIMBE College of Fellows represents the top 2 percent of medical and biological engineers nationwide.

“Professor Plesniak has made impressive contributions to the biomedical engineering field and is very deserving of this recognition,” said David Dolling, dean of SEAS. “He is a distinguished scholar in bio fluid dynamics and is considered a leading expert in experimental work on modeling the fluid mechanics of human speech.”

Dr. Plesniak holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Prior to joining GW, he was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, the Eugene Kleiner Professor for Innovation in Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnic University of New York and the Director of the Fluid Dynamics and Hydraulics Program at the National Science Foundation.

American Institute for Medical and Biological EngineeringFounded in 1991, AIMBE serves to advocate on issues impacting the medical and biological engineering community. AIMBE is the authoritative voice and advocate for the value of medical and biological engineering to society. It is an organization of leaders in medical and biological engineering, consisting of academic, industrial, professional society councils and elected fellows. The health and value of AIMBE as an advocate for public policy issues related to improving lives through medical and biological engineering is ensured by a College of Fellows comprised of experts in areas such as clinical practice, industrial practice, and education.

GW School of Engineering and Applied ScienceGW’s School of Engineering and Applied Science prepares engineers and applied scientists to address society’s technological challenges by offering outstanding undergraduate, graduate and professional educational programs, and by providing innovative, fundamental and applied research activities. The school has five academic departments, 11 research centers, 90 faculty and more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Core areas of academic excellence include biomedical engineering, cybersecurity, high performance computing, nanotechnologies, robotics and transportation safety engineering.
