Study Offers Hope for People with Diabetes and New Evidence for All Health Care Payers

Experts to Discuss Findings from New Lewin Group Study in Conference Call Briefing

In just one year, health care payers can improve the health status of their members with diabetes, resulting in lower costs -- a fact that has never before been demonstrated until now. Experts will discuss findings from a breakthrough study published by The Lewin Group in the August issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The study evaluates first-year outcomes from a comprehensive health care management program for people with diabetes developed by Diabetes Treatment Centers of America (DTCA) and implemented by DTCA at seven managed care plans comprising more than 360,000 covered lives and 7,000 diabetic lives. Why is this study important? The estimated 16 million Americans with diabetes have new hope that they can receive excellent care in a managed care setting provided that a comprehensive program is in place. Managed care organizations now have proof that they should invest in a population management approach, rather than merely providing patient education programs. Policymakers, consumer advocates and the general public now have evidence that the promise of managed care can be fulfilled.
