Pércio S. Gulko, MD, Named Chief of Rheumatology for the Mount Sinai Health System
Newswise — (NEW YORK – Monday, May 05, 2014) The Mount Sinai Health System has announced Pércio S. Gulko, MD, as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicine. An expert in rheumatoid arthritis and author of over sixty leading peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Gulko will play a key role in advancing patient care, expanding research and developing comprehensive and innovative treatments for patients suffering from rheumatological disorders.

Dr. Gulko's research has focused on the identification and characterization of new genes implicated in the regulation of disease severity and joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis. He has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, and has lectured both nationally and internationally. Dr. Gulko serves on the Editorial Board of Genes and Immunity and Physiological Genomics, and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology.
In his new position, Dr. Gulko will lead a team of highly-trained, multidisciplinary experts in offering specialized care for conditions such as inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Sjogren syndrome, as well as osteoarthritis, inflammatory muscle disease, amyloidosis, and related conditions under a new Arthritis Center of Excellence. Dr. Gulko plans to expand Mount Sinai's research and clinical trials to better understand rheumatologic diseases and identify new treatments to improve patient care.

Dr. Gulko joins Mount Sinai from North Shore-LIJ in Manhasset, New York where he served as Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Rheumatology at the Center for Genomics and Human Genetics at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. He was also a Professor of Molecular Medicine at Hofstra University and an Attending Physician in the Division of Rheumatology at North Shore University Hospital.
Dr. Gulko completed his medical degree, internship and clinical fellowship in Rheumatology at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Porto Alegre in Brazil. He came to the United States as a research fellow in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and later completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He also completed a rheumatology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, and was a faculty member at the Divisions of Autoimmune and Molecular Disease and Rheumatology at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons before joining the Feinstein Institute.
