The widespread adoption of the electronic health record (EHR), spurred by meaningful use and related federal programs, is changing the way health care providers interact with laboratory information. Now, more than ever, pathologists need to be well-versed in the field of clinical informatics in order to deliver high quality and cost-effective patient care.

Leading experts in the field of clinical informatics Liron Pantanowitz, MD, Walter Henricks, MD, FCAP, and Donald S. Karcher, MD, are co-developers of a new graduate medical education clinical informatics curriculum, Pathology Informatics Essentials for Residents (PIER).

The new curriculum was introduced today at the APC annual meeting and was jointly developed by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC), and the Association for Pathology Informatics (API).

It offers key training elements for residency program directors and faculty to implement informatics training, while meeting the milestone requirements outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Details about PIER can be found on the APC’s website at www.apcprods.org/PIER.

Drs. Pantanowitz, Henricks, and Karcher are available to speak to:

•Why clinical informatics training is important for pathology residents and integral to the modern practice of pathology•How the new curriculum meets education and workforce needs •Why the role of the pathologist is critical in understanding, anticipating, and communicating EHR-related laboratory information management issues that affect patient care and safety
