Newswise — The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce that Rodney K. Dishman, Ph.D., FACSM, is a recipient of its 2016 Citation Award. Dr. Dishman was selected for this award because of his significant contributions to sports medicine and the exercise sciences. He was recognized at an awards banquet during the association’s annual meeting.

“Citation Award winners are selected for their leadership and contributions in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services or educational services,” said Liz Joy, president of ACSM. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. Dishman’s tremendous accomplishments.”

Dr. Dishman is professor of exercise science and director of the exercise psychology laboratory in the kinesiology department at the University of Georgia. He is also a member of the neuroscience division, Biomedical Health Sciences Institute and adjunct professor in psychology at the University of Georgia. In addition, he is an adjunct professor of exercise science at the Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.

After completing his undergraduate degree at Missouri State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Dr. Dishman began a distinguished career studying the determinants and mental health outcomes of physical activity. He is acknowledged for establishing the research foundation for “exercise adherence,” a term that he is credited with popularizing. His groundbreaking work on understanding regular participation in physical activity led to his appointment to the scientific advisory committee for the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and acknowledgment from Division 47, American Psychological Association with its Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Dishman has authored or co-authored nine books, 40 book chapters, more than 200 peer-reviewed original publications and has served on the editorial board of the leading journals in exercise science. He has been consistently funded, as principal or co-investigator, with grants totaling more than $17 million.

Dr. Dishman’s Citation Award was one of six that were given this year. Other recipients include:
