Newswise — Scott & White Hospital – Round Rock, a hospital within Baylor Scott & White Health, is the first hospital in the Central Texas region to perform a same-day joint replacement discharge on a patient who underwent a direct anterior total hip replacement surgery.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 300,000 total hip replacements are performed annually in the U.S. Hip replacement removes and replaces diseased parts of the joint. The surgery’s goals include increasing mobility, improving the function of the hip joint, and relieving pain.

“For those who qualify, this same-day approach means a patient could have surgery in the morning and go home later that afternoon,” said Richard Schultz, MD, orthopedic surgeon and chief of surgery, Scott & White – Round Rock. “Generally speaking, joint replacement patients are typically in the hospital for a few days. We’ve refined our team-oriented approach through more than 800 direct anterior hip replacements. Now, many patients can go home the same day of their surgery.”

During an anterior hip replacement, an orthopedic surgeon reaches the hip by working through natural openings between muscles. By not having to cut the muscle tissue with this approach, there is typically decreased pain and faster recovery for the patient.

“We are tailoring the care that each patient needs to optimize their recovery from surgery. And, same-day total hip replacement now allows us to meet all of the patient’s needs,” said Dr. Schultz.

“Many of our patients routinely go home the next day after having surgery. Our mission is to provide the right care for each patient going home the same, next, or however many days are needed,” said Dr. Schultz.
