Newswise — CHICAGO – A system of food production that protects natural resources and the environment is important to everyone’s health, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Academy has published a practice paper to help registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered “meet the growing needs of those seeking guidance on food choices as they relate to ecological sustainability.”

The Academy’s practice paper “Promoting Ecological Sustainability within the Food System” was published March 1. A practice paper is a critical analysis of current research that enables Academy members to translate nutrition science into the highest quality advice and services. Practice papers are published on the Academy’s website for Academy members and are available to the public for purchase.

According to the Academy: “Food system sustainability is dependent, in part, upon the protection and conservation of soil, water, energy and the preservation of biodiversity. This presents a unique opportunity for RDs and DTRs to promote practices that support and sustain natural resources and the environment. This paper provides a brief overview of dietary guidance in support of ecological sustainability and highlights the importance of preserving biodiversity and protecting and conserving soil, water and energy.”

The paper emphasizes that RDs and DTRs can help consumers improve the environment in their workplaces and personal lives by educating and encouraging sustainable food choices.

“Registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered have an opportunity to shape the future of our food system and are uniquely poised to meet the growing needs of clients seeking guidance on food choices as they relate to human health and ecological sustainability,” according to the Academy’s practice paper. “It is essential that the dietetics community take a more active leadership role in support of ecological sustainability and social responsibility.”

The Academy’s practice paper was written by registered dietitian Ramona Robinson-O’Brien, clinical research project manager at the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation; and dietetic technician, registered Bonnie L. Gerald, owner, Gerald Consulting LLC, Hattiesburg, Miss.
