Newswise — In case you hadn’t noticed, the classic, 20th-century ideal of employment—one full-time job for every worker—is dying. That Uber driver who just shuttled you to your next appointment might spend some part of his week developing new clothes to sell in his Etsy shop, and the rest of his time offering his copyediting services on Fiverr to clients on three different continents.

What lies behind the rise in this ‘1099 economy’ (named after the IRS form filed by all U.S. citizens in business for themselves)? To some extent, it’s driven by a reduced supply of well-paying, full-time jobs. But it’s also being driven by the Internet, which is making it easier for creative individuals to carve a niche (or two or three) that reflects their interests. According to the Freelancers Union, 53 million Americans are now freelancing—that’s 34 percent of the entire U.S. workforce, and more than the total combined population of 25 states.

An independent study conducted by Freelancers Union and Elance-oDesk found that this workforce is adding $715 billion annually to the U.S. economy through its freelance work. One in three freelancers said they have seen demand for their services rise in the past year, and 43 percent of freelancers said they expect their income to increase in the coming year. Nearly eight in ten freelancers said they make the same or more money than they did before they started freelancing—indicating that freelancing can be an even more lucrative career path than traditional jobs. In fact, 42 percent said they already make more than before they started freelancing.

Of course, succeeding in the 1099 economy means knowing how to handle a wide array of money issues. That’s where Rich Dad Education comes in.
