Newswise — MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. –Tufts University has been named the Truman Foundation's 2014 Institution of Honor. Truman Scholarship Honor Institutions are selected on the basis of active encouragement of outstanding young people to pursue careers in public services, effective promotion of the Truman program on their campus and sustained success in helping their students win Truman Scholarships.

Since the scholarship's inception in 1975, Tufts has had 13 Truman Scholars. Two Tufts students were named Truman Scholars just this year, one of only five colleges and universities with more than one new Truman Scholar in 2014. This is the third time that Tufts has had two Truman Scholars in a single year. All four of Tufts’ nominees were named regional finalists this year.

“We are proud of all our Truman Scholars over the years. This honor commends our students’ commitment to active citizenship and recognizes the work they’ve done addressing society’s most pressing problems,” said Alan D. Solomont, Dean of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. “It is also a testament to our program specialist Anne Moore, who coordinates campus applications for the scholarship and works tirelessly with these student leaders to reach their full potential, fostering a dedication to social issues.”

Previously named Honor Institutions include Georgetown and Harvard Universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Williams College and Yale University. The entire list is accessible here.

As the living memorial to the thirty-third President, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation supports the graduate education of outstanding young people committed to public service leadership. Since its creation in 1975, the Foundation has supported almost 3,000 Truman Scholars who are making a difference in all corners of the nation and around the globe.
