Andrew Highsmith, one-time resident of Flint, can comment on the progress that's been made during the past year, the battles over water delivery and pipe replacement, and possible policy remedies.

"The Flint water crisis is a stark reminder of health disparities in modern America that plague some of the most vulnerable members of our population," Highsmith says. "It is an ongoing saga about structures of inequality and the effects on public health."

Highsmith is an assistant professor, history, at the University of California, Irvine. He is a specialist in modern U.S. history, with expertise in metropolitan development, public policy, racial and economic inequalities and public health.
