The Institute of Medicine will issue its findings Oct. 30 from a 15-month investigation into sports-related concussions sustained by young athletes. A group of 17 scientists, including UCLA’s Mayumi Prins, looked at sports-related head injuries from elementary school through young adulthood.

The committee studied the causes of concussions and weighed the effectiveness of protective equipment. The group also reviewed screening, diagnosis, treatment and long-term consequences of hits to the head. The federally funded Institute of Medicine is part of the National Academies of Science.

Prins, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is available for interviews. See her bio at http://neurosurgery.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=663.
