It's a harrowing sight: eight rare cars swallowed by a giant sinkhole this week at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.

But such occurrences aren't necessarily uncommon, according to University of Louisville associate professor Tom Rockaway.

Rockaway, a civil engineer, says that Kentucky's geography is full of "cracks and slivers" that can easily lead to the formation of sinkholes. And while engineering studies are conducted before any construction project, sometimes the potential danger lurking below can't be detected.
