Newswise — CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia — 18 November 2016 — The University of Virginia Darden School of Business recently welcomed Joseph “Joey” Burton as the new executive director of the Institute for Business in Society.

Burton arrives from the University of Chicago, where he led the research, operations and outreach efforts of two centers. He previously served as executive director of the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics at the Law School and director of research and operations for the Center for Population Economics at the Chicago Booth School of Business.

In his new role, Burton will be responsible for the overall strategy and administration of the institute, including engagement with key internal and external stakeholders. He will lead the institute’s strategic vision, work with Darden leadership and faculty to develop and implement research and programs, and grow the institute’s network and awareness by elevating its platform for national and global conversations related to the impact of business in society.

“Joey’s experience elevating faculty research and creating programming that reaches outside the institution into the larger business, policy and social spheres is directly relevant to the goals of the Institute for Business in Society,” said Darden Dean Scott Beardsley. “We are thrilled for him to join our team of world-class leaders and faculty here at the Darden School, who are dedicated to our mission to improve the world by inspiring and developing responsible leaders and advancing knowledge.”

“Darden’s marriage of scholarly rigor with a values-driven culture of collaboration makes it the right place to steward the conversation on the positive effect business has on civil society institutions,” said Burton.

“I have found Darden to be markedly and almost uniquely pro-business in its orientation,” he added. “Darden faculty and students really believe business, guided by values — and in collaboration with other sectors — has power to transform and lift and make society better off.”

Burton replaces founding Institute for Business in Society Executive Director Dean Krehmeyer, who now serves as chief of staff in the Darden Dean’s Office.

“I am energized by the prospect of working with the Darden School’s leadership, faculty, students and alumni to demonstrate the positive impact that business can have in broader society, and to bring attention to the ways that Darden’s research and programming are helping businesses and business leaders produce social benefits around the globe,” Burton remarked.

Burton holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business as well as a master’s degree in public policy and bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.
