Lee Adler, labor regulations and collective bargaining expert in Cornell University’s ILR School, says the California court’s ruling in Vergara v California – that the state’s teacher-protection laws are unconstitutional – is a “half baked” solution that will cause more harm than good.
Adler says:
“California’s public schools – so severely underfunded since the advent of Prop. 13 in the late 1970’s, and more and more populated with economically needy school children, mostly of color – have been profoundly neglected by Democratic and Republican leadership.
“The tragedy of this court decision is that it will further inflame the ‘school wars’ in that great state while offering an opportunistic, half-baked solution which will only create more sadness and shortcomings for millions of America’s poorest children.”
