Elaine Larson, PhD, RN, FAAN, CIC, Associate Dean for Research

Expertise: infection control, hand hygiene, isolation, personal protective equipment, nursing practice

Larson is a fellow in the Institute of Medicine and has advised the World Health Organization on best practices for infection control. She has been editor of the American Journal of Infection Control since 1995 and has published more than 250 journal articles, four books and a number of book chapters in the areas of infection prevention, epidemiology and clinical research. She has served on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and was a chair of the CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. Larson has also served as a consultant in infection control internationally, contributing to prevention and education efforts in developing countries around the world.

Stephen Ferrara, DNP, FAANP, FNP-BC, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs

Expertise: nurse training, nursing protocols for infection control, proper use of personal protective equipment, nursing workforce, clinical practice

Ferrara oversees clinical education and training for the next generation of nurses. He also manages the nurse practitioners at the Primary and Immediate Care practice at Columbia Doctors, one of the premier nurse-run primary care services in the nation. He has worked as a family nurse practitioner at Montefiore Medical Center and as an associated adjunct professor at Pace University, where he earned his doctorate. In addition, he is Executive Director for the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York State (link is external), where he successfully advocated for the passage of the state’s NP Modernization Act, a law that lets experienced NPs practice for the first time without physician supervision.

Jennifer Dohrn, DNP, CNM, Director of the Office of Global Initiatives

Expertise: global health, midwifery, public health, infection control in the developing world, health care delivery in Africa, maternal and infant care in the developing world, infectious disease in global health

Dohrn oversees global health research and clinical practice and teaches courses in addressing population health needs on a global scale. For the past two decades, she has worked in ten African countries to build capacity of nurses and midwives in HIV care. She served as the first Project Director for PEPFAR/ICAP Global Nurse Capacity Building Program at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health. She is currently building a nursing and midwifery research leadership network in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Dorhn is teaching about Ebola developments in real-time as her students in global health learn about health disparities. Dohrn speaks Spanish.
