Newswise — Jeffrey Upperman, MD, pediatric trauma surgeon, is director of the trauma program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He is also on the board of the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Commission on Children and Disasters and has received NIH funding for his research in this area.
On October 19, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement from the Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council, Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine emphasizing the particular needs of children – both in an out of the hospital setting – during a disaster.
Dr. Upperman can provide information about the unique needs of children during a disaster, how environmental hazards may affect them more quickly due to their size and how families and communities can help prepare for these possible events.
