"The suicide bombing in the heart of Istanbul that targeted tourists could not have come at a worse time," said Evren Celik Wiltse, political science professor at South Dakota State University. "The chain of bombings in Turkey since the summer of 2015 seem to be moving toward large urban centers, targeting foreigners as well as Turkish nationals. Yet, instead of aggressively tracking down the perpetrators and their connections, Turkish law enforcement opted to detain dozens of academics this week.

"Meanwhile, there is yet to be a comprehensive campaign in Turkey to address the brewing ISIS networks in the country that promote, recruit and execute acts of terrorism in perpetually growing scale." Celik Wiltse, an Ankara, Turkey, native, specializes in comparative politics and international relations. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bogazici University in Istanbul, and her doctorate degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Her latest book, “Democratic Reform and Consolidation: the cases of Mexico and Turkey,” was released in 2015 by Colchester: ECPR Press.
