Water crisis in Flint, Michigan

Newswise — President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Flint because of its lead-filled tap water, and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is under fire.

Andrew Highsmith, assistant professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, has been studying Flint for more than 10 years and can speak about its history and about public health in cities.

His book Demolition Means Progress: Flint, Michigan, and the Fate of the American Metropolis shows how the perennial quest for urban renewal – even more than white flight, corporate abandonment and other forces – can actually increase economic inequality and racial segregation. His current book project is Toxic Metropolis: Cities, Suburbs, and the Battle Over Public Health in Modern America.
