Filmmaker Brent Huffman working to save Afghan site slated for demolition

Newswise — EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University professor and documentary filmmaker Brent Huffman, whose latest movie investigates a Chinese mining company’s plans to raze a 5,000-year-old archaeological site in Afghanistan, is available to discuss the destruction of antiquities around the world. He can also comment on looting.

Huffman is an assistant professor in the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. He can be reached at [email protected] or 847-491-7580. BIO

His movie, “Saving Mes Aynak,” follows the frantic efforts of archaeologists working to protect the ancient Buddhist site in Afghanistan, which sits atop an estimated $100 billion of copper. Mining is scheduled to begin this year. The open pit process would destroy Mes Aynak and 90 percent of the artifacts; so far only 10 percent of it has been excavated.

Recently, Huffman also has been examining China’s international presence in Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
