Newswise — American University Expert Available to Discuss Topics Surrounding Mental Health Awareness Month

BACKGROUND: May is Mental Health Awareness Month. With recent headlines about the rise in the number of suicides in the United States, to Kristen Bell and other celebrities discussing their struggles with mental health issues, please find the following expert below who can help with your story coverage:

Nathaniel Herr, assistant professor of psychology, is director of AU’s Interpersonal Emotion Lab. Herr has a clinical specialty for individuals who have a high risk for self-injury and suicide, and has worked with individuals with depression and borderline personality disorder, both of which are associated with increased risk for suicide. An expert on assessing the risk factors for suicide and the level of risk for suicide of a given individual's behaviors, Herr can discuss the fine line between non-suicidal self injury and a suicide attempt and the links between impulsivity and emotion regulation and suicide.
