Newswise — PARK RIDGE, Illinois – An expert in nurse anesthesia practice, education and policy, Steve Alves, PhD, CRNA, FNAP, FAAN, has been inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) where he will join more than 2,400 nursing leaders. Alves will be honored with 163 other inductees at a ceremony to be held during the AAN’s annual policy conference, October 20-22, 2016, in Washington, D.C.
Alves, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has advocated for the nurse anesthesia profession through research on Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), their scope of practice and how working in an anesthesia team care setting affects CRNAs and their stress levels. His enthusiasm for education spurred him to redesign and transition the U.S. Army Nurse Anesthesia Program to a post-baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, for which he won the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s Excalibur Award.
Currently professor of clinical studies at the University of Miami School of Nursing & Health Studies, Coral Gables, Fla., Alves continues his work on nurse anesthesia policy, working to reform outdated healthcare policies with practice restrictions, and advocating for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to be able to practice to the full scope of their education and expertise.
