Newswise — Washington, D.C. (March 1, 2017) –The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) has released the latest episode of its “FSMB Spotlight” series which features interviews with health care leaders about issues impacting state medical boards as they carry out their mission of protecting the public.

In this episode, FSMB President and CEO Humayun Chaudhry, DO, MACP sits down with J. Daniel Gifford, MD, FACP to discuss the efforts of FSMB Workgroups to study and develop recommendations and guidelines on issues such as the appropriate use of telemedicine technologies, the use of marijuana in patient care, and the forthcoming updated model policy on the use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain.

“The field of medicine is constantly changing,” said Dr. Gifford, Immediate Past Chair of the FSMB Board of Directors. “Medicine will continue to change, but these workgroups have laid a good foundation so that we are better equipped to handle problems as we face them in the future.”

As Chairman of the FSMB Workgroup tasked with updating the model policy on the use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain, Dr. Gifford also discusses the progress being made on a final draft of the policy. Once finalized, the policy will be slated for a vote of approval by the FSMB House of Delegates at FSMB’s Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, Texas in April of this year.
