Jessica Spaccio, a climatologist with the NOAA-funded Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University says that while the recent winter storm brought heavy snowfall, it was not record-breaking.
Spaccio says:
“A winter storm brought heavy snowfall to areas of the Northeast. Though there were hazardous conditions, the 1-day snowfall amounts weren’t record breaking.
“The last two winters were mild, but snow like this is not uncommon. There has been a trend in the Northeast for shorter and milder winters due to climate change. We expect this trend to continue overall, but we also expect to see some cold and snowy winters as well.”
